Instagram often causes a stir in the scene, usually from individuals when individual images or the entire account is blocked for no reason. But this time there is a big reason for excitement: Instagram is implementing a map with user locations, making it visible to everyone where you are.

But don't worry, here's the good news: you have to actively choose to share your location with others, and you can disable sharing at any time. If you decide to use the feature, Instagram offers different ‘levels’ of sharing: friends (people you follow who also follow you), close friends or specific people. You can also disable location sharing for specific places or people, so you don't have to reveal your home address.

However, according to Instagram, there will be no live tracking in real time. Instead, the location will be updated when the app is opened or when the user returns to it. Depending on usage behaviour, however, this can quickly become almost real-time tracking.

In addition to location sharing, the map also allows you to view posts, reels, or stories from friends at the locations where they were taken.

The feature will initially be introduced in the US, and later in the EU.
